COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus disease, is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The virus was first identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and has since spread globally, leading to a pandemic.
COVID-19 primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes. Common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, but some people may also experience fatigue, body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, or congestion.
While many people with COVID-19 experience mild to moderate symptoms, others can develop severe illness, including pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and multiple organ failure. People who are older or have underlying health conditions, such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes, are at higher risk of developing severe illness.
